Position Overview:

The Chief Executive Officer leads the day-to-day operations of two allied organizations: For Our Future, a federal independent-expenditure (“super”) PAC, and For Our Future Action Fund, an IRC section 501(c)(4) “social welfare” advocacy organization.  (For simplicity in this document, both are referred to as “For Our Future,” and their distinct roles are not differentiated.) 

For Our Future incorporates both issue advocacy and robust electoral programming – to win elections and regain power by engaging and mobilizing people and community-based organizations on progressive issues. Established in 2016, FOF was an investment to build permanent progressive infrastructure in key communities.  With an initial focus on 7 states, FOF developed 180+ community based partnerships with local organizations, providing them with critical targeting, communications and digital support to help them grow and strengthen their capacity.  Through our work, we expanded data resources, promoted progressive public policies, increased Clinton performance in canvass areas, and elevated engagement and turnout of targeted voters.

In 2017, For Our Future is continuing the mandate to connect issues and elections – because the two go hand in hand – with a focus on establishing permanence and economies of scale to be leveraged.  FOF will continue to grow through 2020, building power, increasing efficiencies, and winning.

The CEO will help create and develop the strategic vision for deepening, expanding and improving For Our Future’s work, towards winning elections and legislative outcomes every year.  The CEO will be a strategist and visionary, with the ability to communicate FOF’s message and work to donors, coalition partners and other stakeholders.  He or she will be an adept manager with the ability to support a strong Executive Committee, lead a large and diverse staff of hundreds of employees, and manage a 50-million-dollar budget.

The CEO will have a demonstrated commitment to progressive values, including creating shared economic prosperity, building strong public schools, addressing climate change, and supporting racial justice. 

Direction and Decision Making:

The CEO is directly responsible to the organizations’ Executive Boards, which include individuals from strategic partners and national funders of For Our Future. The CEO is charged with managing and skillfully representing the long-term vision and strategic direction of the organizations and complying with local, state and federal laws, compliance and regulations.

Requirements & Responsibilities:

  • Create and develop a strategic vision for growing a national communications and field operation that reaches voters and lifts progressive issues at the national and state level to build power every year and win electoral victories especially in 2018 and 2020.
  • Support strong Executive Boards.  Organize and attend weekly meetings, seek Board involvement in and approval of major strategic decisions, and provide Boards with talking points, updates and comprehensive written strategic documents as needed.
  • Represent For Our Future in meetings, conversations and communications with new and existing donors.  Persuasively outline For Our Future’s unique role and effectiveness and make compelling cases for funding. 
  • Play a leading role in collaborating with a diverse set of issue organizations to create a common vision and purpose that leads to issue and electoral victory.
  • Develop and implement operational plans, policies, and goals that further strategic objectives.
  • Ensure rigorous program evaluation and formulate and implement corrective action as needed.
  • Recruit, hire and supervise a competent and effective national and state staff.
  • Provide leadership to organizational personnel through effective goal setting, delegation, and communication.
  • Ensure that appropriate salary and wage structures are maintained.
  • Ensure compliance in accordance with all federal and state regulations and guidelines pertinent to the organizations’ various roles as employer, 501(c)(4) and super PAC.
  • Maintain full awareness of the complete financial and accounting records of the organizations.
  • Ensure that operating results established in the annual plans and budgets and approved by the Executive Boards are achieved and control operating expenses within budget.
  • Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all compliance and reporting.
  • Ensure the preparation of the annual budgets for the Boards’ approval.

  • Leadership: A passionate labor and environmental advocate with a proven record of senior organizational leadership, who understands the fights—both offensive and defensive—that we must engage in to win back power for progressives by 2020. Must be a visionary leader who has confidently engaged others to be proactive in joining our organizations’ mission and goals. Evidence of organizational effectiveness in confronting and adapting to challenging and changing political/organizational realities. Capable and willing to voice respectful and effective dissent when and where appropriate. Has a demonstrated, successful record of attracting and motivating highly talented staff and has success in building and maintaining effective coalition partnerships.
  • Strategic Planning and Execution: Documented experience in leading organization-wide efforts in planning, implementation, process improvements, innovation, financial management and building high performance work teams. A record of executive leadership in strategic planning that required significant organizational change, including experience utilizing reliable methods to ensure accountability and timeliness in the execution of strategic goals and objectives. Strong ability to delegate while resisting the urge to micro-manage. Specific evidence that reveals past approaches to work that demonstrate personal prowess in assessing benefits and risks toward a goal of creating strategic advantage. An individual who possesses the ability to juggle multiple projects with clear priorities and to easily articulate the connections between the big picture and specific action plans and timetables.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: An effective communicator who has excelled in building successful relationships. Has an established record of fostering teamwork and consensus, effectively managing conflict, and provoking creative problem-solving and risk taking, and is inclusive of diverse individual and cultural perspectives.
  • Relevant Knowledge: Possesses demonstrable knowledge of effective and successful field plans, including targeting, voter contact, GOTV and best practices with each.
  • Communications: Has strong written and verbal communication skills, and is a persuasive communicator with strong multidisciplinary project skills.

Experience and Education:

  • A minimum of 10 years of senior management experience in positions of increasing responsibility. 
  • A belief in the central roles of unions and progressive organizations coupled with an unwavering support for public education, organized labor and environmental protection is required. Background in labor and environmental advocacy and collective bargaining experience desired.
  • Experience in reporting to and advising an elected board of directors preferred. 
  • Experience running statewide large scale field operations is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college is required; advanced degree preferred.
